Review: Army of One

Plot:
Gary Faulkner is an eccentric man who believes that God has contacted him for a mission. That mission being to hunt down and capture Osama Bin Laden.

Summary:
oh man... This movie. Army of One is a gonzo film! Not only is the plot just absurd, but it also features a truly manic Nicholas Cage performance. This movie is based on a true story, and that only proves how reality is truly stranger than fiction.

Best Parts:
The best part about this movie is undoubtedly Nicolas Cage. I love Nicolas Cage and think he's a great actor, and in this movie he's just mesmerizing. He plays the character of Gary Faulkner in a cracked out sort of way that only Nicolas Cage could do. I felt like I couldn't take my eyes off him, he's that entertaining.
Meanwhile, the relationship that plays out between Cage and Wendi McLendon-Covey is sweet and adds a sense of much needed depth to this character.
Apart from Cage, the humor is very over the top- partially because of how absurd everything is. I mean, it has Nicolas Cage with a samurai sword trying to hang-gliding his way into Pakistan! Like, you can't help but laugh at how absurd everything is.

Worst Parts:
It does take a while for this movie to get going, and plods along in certain parts. However, despite being one of the best parts, Nicolas Cage decided to use this strange accent that just grates after a while. It makes no sense as to why Cage would do this accent, especially seeing how the real life Gary Faulkner doesn't remotely sound like that.

Conclusion:
Army of one just feels like a crazy fever dream of a comedy. There were parts of this movie where I didn't really know where it was going to go. This movie is wildly unpredictable. Plus any movie that has Nicolas Cage sword fighting Osama Bin Laden is worth checking out on it's own. But this movie is certainly entertaining enough. Overall I give this movie:

7/10
